What is catching my eye.

I had a few people ask me where I got the striped dresses for my girls that they wore on Memorial Day. thanks to my super stylish sister in law, Debbie, I found out about a company called Olive Juice. It is incredible. Their customer service is wonderful - they searched and searched for all three outfits for my girls. They are up to a size 12 - so if you want to keep those little girls young these modest, stylish clothes are the way to go. Do yourself a favor and sign up for a catalog, you won't regret it.
request a catalog.
they have great shoes too!

I must also give a shout out about a new cottage company creation. The Pixie Patch. They are the snuggly "soupies" as we call them in our house, with little ribbons for playing, touching and attaching treasures, such as binkies, or their favorite toys, your car keys, photos and they are small enough for the kids always have with them all the time. (yes I am all for an adult version)
if you love soft, ribbon, wonderful colors, quality hand sewn items, but want to have someone else make it, they will ship directly to any baby shower!!
This brown and blue one is so eye pleasing.

they have other baby items that make great gifts so don't miss it!

Challenge:
What's in your wallet?

So here is my wallet. It is clean and new and a gift from Mother's Day. (and to think Jeff never reads my blog, here was my major hint in January)
I have many things in my wallet but here are a few that say something about me.

I am sentimental.
I got this membership card in 1998. It is for the Girl's Club. I have carried it with me since I got it. My niece who is now a teenager came up with a girls club for all the girls in Jeff's family. On the back of the card it has a list of cute rules of what it takes to be in the club. My relationship with the girls in Jeff's family has been a incredible blessing in my life and carrying this card is a reminder of that.

I am Lazy.
To avoid having to write my phone number down on little slips of paper or email someone my address, I carry Mom Cards (like business cards) around with me. I got them for free from Vista Print and then splurged the $5.00 on the silver case to carry them in. It has all my information on it and saves me lots of time. ( credit to this idea goes to my friend Stacy, really all my good ideas stem from the think tank in her studio) You can get cute ones from Doodlebugs or Stationery with Style.
I like a good deal
These are my Ritz Camera photo cards to get cheap but great prints. I prepaid for the 300 prints this past Christmas to print my photos for my cards. By buying two years worth of photos at once I will be saving money in the long run. So this year's photos are already paid for. I am such a nut!
I am in love.
This is a photo of Jeff when he was... well I don't know how old. My sister in law, Julie, sent it to me when Jeff and I were engaged and it has been in any wallet for 13 years. I love this guy so much and just love seeing photos of him when he was a kid.

I enjoy wholesale shopping.
I love mastering the items that are worth buying at Sam's and Costco. Here are a few: Bleach, batteries, lettuce, printer cartridges and milk.

I am spiritual, love history and treats.
My Temple recommend was surprisingly in my wallet, I never seem to remember where it is, I love my church.
My annual pass to Mt. Vernon. I hope we have one every year we live in the D.C. area. I have been about 8 times this year.
Marble Slab club. two more stamps and I get a free cone. I have you tried the nutter butter mix in... peanut butter lovers beware!

We are a Military Family.
I would never thought I would have a military ID. I love having this. I feel a sense of pride using it and always do when I need to show photo ID. Jeff will only be in the Military for 3 more years and it has been a blessing to us in so many ways. This also could go under my thrifty category, I can not believe how many military discounts there are out there.

Lelly, thanks again for all you do for the wonderful weekly challenges.
This is journal-ling at it's best!

Photo taken at the Vietnam Memorial - May 28, 2007

Our Memorial Day 2007
Our day turned out to be great and quite unexpected. We woke up exhausted with no plans to do anything but sit at the pool all day. Then at 9:00 am Jeff packs up lunches and puts the bikes in the back of the car and says - we are going downtown. Within minutes we were all ready to go. (we never schedule anything and are so last minute and I think why we end up doing more than if we planned it out)

Our families favorite song is the Jonas Brothers "Year 3000" Whenever it comes on Caroline says, "It's the Jonas Brothers" even Sally Jane knows the words. So i had to take a photo of the song when it came on Radio Disney. (if you have not seen the video it is so cute!) We of course love them even more after we saw them perform live on the White House lawn at Easter.

As we were getting ready to pull of the GW parkway we noticed a low flying helicopter. Traffic seemed to be stopped anywhere it was flying over, we got off the parkway and pulled right into the city in front of the Washington monument the block before the White House. We had at first thought that the President was in there getting ready to land on the White House lawn, then we figured it was just securing the area and that the motorcade was getting ready to drive by. We were about 5 cars back from the line of vehicles that drove by.
I could not get a good shot of his car so I turned to take a photo of the girls peeking out of the car to wave to him. They were so excited! We figured he was on his way to Arlington to make his Memorial Day speech.
We were so lucky to get a street parking right across from the Vietnam Memorial. We got out our bikes and then started at the Lincoln Memorial to head to the Capitol and then back.
Most of my photos were taken today while I was biking, so they are not that great but so lucky to have a sleek small camera to use. This was the line to get down to the Vietnam Memorial. There were news cameras everywhere and broadcasters doing live broadcasts.
Photo of the many flowers of the Vietnam memorial the black wall is right behind my back.
We felt lucky to be able to maneuver our bikes through all the people on the sidewalks. Jeff was nice enough to pull the trailer today. You can't tell from the photo but all the flags around the memorial are flying half mast. On Memorial day you fly flags half mast before noon and then rise them to the top. So when we came back around they were flying high. Kind of cool.
we rode past the Smithsonian Carousel and just had to stop. something we had never done before. The Carousel is directly across from the Red Castle that now serves as a visitor center for all the Smithsonian museums.
Annie Kate on the Carousel that has been there since 1967 but was built in the 1940's.
This could be one of my favorite finds of the day. It is a mailbox in the visitors Center that will get a hand cancelled post mark. The post mark is what is shown on the sign. (kind of like what Jill talked about at the Eiffel Tower) Ok, so my heart started racing thinking... I am going to bring my Christmas Cards here to get this postmark. I studied the box to see if could hold 250 cards. Jeff thinks that it is too much to drop off, but I am highly considering it!! But if you visit D.C. send yourself a postcard from this box for sure.
In front of the Castle is the Kathrine Dulin Folger Rose garden. It is beautiful.
I loved this photo of Jeff putting on Caroline's helmet. The red, blue and green seem so vivid.
There is a Memorial Day parade and we saw the whole thing. Only it was not moving. We rode our bikes along all the floats and bands waiting to march on the way to the Capitol. It was the best way to see a parade, it took about 10 minutes.

We then came back down to the Lincoln Memorial and then went across the Memorial Bridge. The Memorial Bridge is kind of symbolic in linking the north (Lincoln Memorial) to the south (the Arlington House, which belonged to Robert E. Lee and now where the Lee Memorial is)
I have wanted to walk, run or bike across this bridge since we moved here, so I was thrilled. It is a bridge that goes across the Potomac.
We had parked close to the Albert Einstein memorial and finally got a chance to stop and let the girls climb on. We were the only ones wanting a photo, which was nice, usually it is so crowded and busy. This memorial is directly across the street from the Vietnam War Memorial.

The Rolling Thunder Alley was where our car was parked and I had to snap a shot. All the Harley's were parked out front and walking by it smelled like leather. It had a bunch of booths selling Harley/biker items. It was just another great D.C. day. And to think we were going to just sit by the pool. (which we did do later in the day)
I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day!

recent photo I took at the Tomb of the Unknown Soilder
Memorial Day 2007

I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.

A young Service man saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.

Sally Jane - Arlington President Kennedy's Grave April 2007

I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.

Korean War Memorial this was the second Memorial we visited when we moved to D.C.
Lincoln was the first. I will never forget how I felt when I read this on the wall.

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears?

How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea

How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.

Sally Jane at Iwo Jima Fall 2006

I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant "Amen,"

When a flag had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,

Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

ways to celebrate Memorial Day (I found this list on this site)
  • by visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.

  • by visiting memorials.

  • by flying the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon.

  • by flying the 'POW/MIA Flag' as well (Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act).

  • by participating in a "National Moment of Remembrance": at 3 p.m. to pause and think upon the true meaning of the day, and for Taps to be played.

  • by renewing a pledge to aid the widows, widowers, and orphans of our falled dead, and to aid the disabled veterans.

White House
This morning was something we have been looking forward to for sometime. One of Jeff's patients works at the White House. He had offered to give our family a tour. After a few reschedules it turned out to be today. We were thrilled that it fell on Memorial Day weekend.

We were not allowed to bring our cameras (which was killing me). So I don't have any great photos of the girls in the Rose Garden but it was a thrill to be there. One of my favorite parts was seeing all the original paintings of the presidents. This is one of my favorites and I loved seeing it. It was a gift given to the White House, by Aaron Shikler, in 1970. It was beautiful.

The STATE Dining Roomthis was how the room looked today but click here
to see all the other ways it can be set up to seat so many.

My other favorite part was standing in the State Dining Room. It only seats about 130 guests. I guess I thought it would have seated more. Carved into the fireplace mantel is a quotation from a letter by John Adams:
"I Pray Heaven to Bestow the Best of Blessing on THIS HOUSE and All that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but Honest and Wise Men ever rule under this Roof."

Our guide read the prayer out loud, which I was so grateful for. It really was touching. He said many presidents have used that prayer before dinners in that room. How cool would it be to have something engraved in your mantel in your home. I wonder what I would put on mine someday. If I have the home to do it in someday, I just might.

Also of note is that this print is the only print hanging in this room.
A 1869 portrait of Abraham Lincoln. My understanding is that it was a gift given to the White House by President Lincoln's oldest son and he wanted no other pri
nts hanging in this room. (don't quote me on that) our great tour guide who even drove us to get our camera from the car
I learned today that anyone important wears a black lanyard around their neck with the badge tucked into their shirt pocket. They seemed to let those people through quite quickly. I need to get a black lanyard.

this photo of Sally Jane is just making me crazy for her!

We snapped a few shots of the girls outside. Even though it felt like it was 100 degrees outside (the summer is here!) they were nice enough to pose for my many camera shots.

getting ready to give dad many kisses!
this is the tie Jeff wore the day we got married. It has stars on the front and stripes on the back. Jeff was laughing that we looked a little garanimals,
but I thought it fit the bill for our outing and Memorial Day weekend.
I got the girls dresses of EBay(new). A great seller! The dress came with the slip and hair bow and I had no idea, which turned out to be a pretty good deal. Annie Kate has not worn a bishop style smocked dress for awhile and surprisingly she loved it. Which goes to show, I don't believe girls these days grow up as fast as we think they have to.The freedom riders are in town for Memorial Day and were everywhere. I am hoping to talk Jeff into going to the Vietnam Memorial tomorrow after church to see them ride, but the heat may be hard to beat.
we also waked past the memorial for the First Infantry Division.
note the red one made out of flowers. is on the west side of the White House and we had never walked that way before and our guide gave us some great information about this memorial.
quote from website:
this monument was originally built by the World War I veterans of the 1st Division and their friends. President Calvin Coolidge dedicated it in 1924. The center pillar was erected after World War I. It contains plaques with the names of the Division's 5516 dead of that war. In 1957, the World War II Wing (west) was dedicated and includes plaques with the names of the Division's 4325 dead of that war. The Vietnam Wing (east) was dedicated in 1977 and has plaques with the names of the Division's 3079 dead of that war. At the edge of the flower bed, to the front of the Vietnam Wing, is a tablet with a plaque containing the names of the Division's 27 dead of the Gulf War, including the first female soldier and first civilian to be killed while serving with the Big Red One. It has recently been completely refurbished. Responsibility for this monument rests with the 1st Infantry Division Foundation.

Pool Time
The pool opened today! YeA! It was so hot and very welcomed activity for our girls.
I was excited to pull out the girls new towels I monogrammed for the summer.
The pool got a fresh batch of new noodles. No bite marks out of them yet.
Caroline and Sally Jane waiting for our new passes. Now that Caroline is 3 she gets her own pass, she was so excited get her photo taken.Annie Kate seconds before the first jump in of the year.

We came home exhausted and tired. Caroline was so excited to see the Netflix envelope. She had recently asked me to get the Hong Kong Phooey video again. I told her it was coming today and it was the perfect way to end the day, in the cool basement watching vintage cartoons.

It was a wonderful day full of history and reminds me how lucky we are to live here.
