Heelys.
In february we went to San Francisco for David and Lenessa's wedding. While we were there Annie Kate's cousin Mark had these shoes called Heelys. Annie Kate has not stopped talking about them since then and has been saving her money. They are so expensive about $80. We told Annie Kate she would have to earn the money. So when Nordstrom had them on sale for $50 this weekend she was able to get them. ( I won't even go into the details of us ending up getting them at another store in the mall for $65 because Nordstrom was out and Jeff and I made up the $15 without her knowing because I didn't want to go back to the mall in a week)
Annie Kate has done this a few times (ie: video camera that took two years) where she has saved for a long period of time for something and it is so fun to watch her buy the item when she does. It can't even compare to if we would have just walked into the mall and bought them for her. Photo of her with bag coming out of store.
She came home ran and got Alex the neighbor and he began teaching her how to do it. They were out there for a few hours working on it. It was so fun to watch them. Then they came in the house and he wrote up a list of goals for her to practice on over the weekend.
One of the things that Annie Kate said I don't want to forget was after she gave the lady at the store her money, "The hard thing about saving up to buy something is when you buy it you have no money and then you have to start all over again" I said what are you saving up for now, "An Ipod" oh my!

Well, since Evie is 2, its save to say i have only done a lot of obsessing and thinking, but nothing in practice. I am writing this all down kristi, right under "I will not take Evie with us on the move back west in 2007"
(Not on the actual trip and unpacking, not that I will leave her here, you know...)
I love this idea! I have always treasured the things I work for much more than the things that come easily. What great skills you & Jeff are teaching AK.

I'm so impressed with Annie Kate's ability to save her money, you and Jeff are doing such a great job teaching her. That skill will save her a lot of grief later in life (I wish I was a saver.)
Landon does pretty well with saving his money for things, but hasn't ever saved for anything that big. Whitney still calls dollars "green papers" so we've got some work to do with her.
That is so impressive! My kids can't seem to save their money. They spend it almost as soon as they get it. We got them savings accounts and they were excited about it for awhile, but the enthusiasm dwindled. We also have a program with envelopes marked for tithing, saving, spending. Max is the only one who ever puts anything into the saving one. I've wondered if we should offer to match whatever they put in their savings accounts?
How did you get AK onto such a good saving plan? I love it. I'm going to tell Max about her iPod plan. He wants one, too.
What a great habit to start with your kids. It is really going to teach them the value of saving for something you want. I cannot believe she is already thinking of her next purchase, although the current one is pretty cool. I would completely injure myself.

That is so awesome. I was good like that when I was younger and even into my teens when I bought my first vehicle with cash- my dad was so proud- he still will bring it up on occassion. I am not so good anymore and I don't know what happened. I too would like to know what you did to teach her to be such a great saver.
AK sounds a lot like me! I am a big saver! I save every penny I make babysitting. But I can't stand spending money, even if I have been saving for a long time and i finily have money for it, i never end up getting it because I want to save up for something even bigger. Right now I'm saving for a car!!

I think it is so great she saved and used her own money! I did this a few times when I was younger and really wanted something, and I can tell you that I took such better care of the stuff I had to actually pay for!! I too love the Nordstrom sale. I don't normally shop at Nordstrom, but it is so worth it during their sales! I just don't enjoy the crowds!!!
SO impressive. Jessica will also save for what she wants. They bought their own trampoline in the fall. She puts her money into the bank now. James on the other hand will give you whatever he has, which is nice, but he doesn't really get the value of it.
With the stuffing envelope job she puts half in the bank and pays tithing out of her half and then she can keep the rest. So far, so good.
Well while most people are impressed with Annie's saving ability, I'm impressed that Heeley's are still cool. Those shoes seemed like they would have died out by now. Got to give it up for the shoe gurus that have ridden this fad for as long as they have. Oh ya saw a real ugly accident with a kid with heelys in Costco, gallon of milk and a carton of eggs. I'll spare you the details. Splat!!
