Never Forget

My feelings about September 11th have changed since Jeff has started his job at Walter Reed. Everything seems different and much more real. We have seen the effects of that day. The stories are not ours and too personal to share publicly, but I am grateful for the change it has had in my life.
Tonight we will talk about as a family what happened. What affects it has had on our country and our family.

Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations

of our biggest buildings, but they cannot

touch the foundation of America.

These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent

the steel of American resolve.

America was targeted for attack because

we are the brightest beacon for freedom

and opportunity in the world.

And no one will keep that light from shining.

President George W. Bush

Amen, Kristi. Our flag is proudly displayed outside, and today is a day of remembrance. I have a huge box of newspaper clippings, magazines, and books that I have saved from 9/11/01 and beyond that I will pull out today. Because of all that was lost this day five years ago, to me, it's a sacred day. In church yesterday, I was pleased that patriotic songs were sung. So often we only sing the first vereses of the patriotic hymns, but when it comes to our national anthem, the final verse is actually my favorite and so very fitting right now:

Oh, thus be it ever, when free men shall stand
betweeen their loved homes
and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace,
may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made
and preserved a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto:
"In God is our trust!"
And the start-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave!

Our flag is out front too and it was wonderful driving around this morning and seeing so many flags out in front of all the houses.

My emotions about 9/11 are still pretty raw. I can flashback to that day so clearly and how I watched tv for like 3 days straight and saw the towers fall over and over and over again. It was devastating. I still can't believe it really happened.

Kristi, I am so glad you posted this. I was trying to think of a way to post about it on my blog, and this is perfect. I will just link everyone to you! It is such a poignant memory in my mind of that day, and now that we live amongst many who work in the city, it is even moreso. It must be that way for you to as you live in the DC area. It is not soon forgetten. I am proud to say that I am an American, and I am so grateful for all who work daily to ensure our protection in so many different ways, both here and abroad!

Our flag is proudly out as well, even though it is getting drenched by pouring rain.

I could go on and on about this day. Thanks for the post its a good time to reflect on being an American.

I think there is something too about it being the 5th anniversary, its getting farther out, and I think its so important not to forget. I watched a show on the National Geographic Channel tonight. I was struck by how very upset I got watching the planes hit the towers when following 9/11 we literally sat and watched that image over and over and over, it was as if our whole country had post traumatic stress disorder and it was so unreal that we had to watch it one more time, and one more time, just to see if it was really real. Now, I literally started sobbing seeing it once. The shock is on a different level and for different reasons today.

Its so important to never forget. I love that quote Kristi.

Thanks for your post. I'm with Jill, my emotions are still pretty raw as well. I have no desire to see the film nor the TV show. It is not that I don't want to be reminded, but I hold the experience very sacred and could not stand to see it desecrated or sensationalized.

So good that you talked about it tonight with your family.

I can hardly think of that day, the loss, the heroism, the bravery, the sorrow and the patriotism without my eyes welling up with tears. How grateful I am for the sacrifice of many so that I may enjoy the freedoms I have today.

Thanks for your post Kristi!
