Sewing with Kids
Have you thought about buying your child a sewing machine? If you have even had a little idea to do so, I say DO IT!
Last week after I finished the Sleeping Beauty costume AK had gone through my scraps and made herself a purse and a skirt (which she wore to school)
The above photo is the purse. What was so great about this is that she did it all on her own. She turned on my machine, changed the speed to slow and even changed the bobbin. I asked her "how did you even know where the bobbins were?" in her cute sassy voice, "I watch you do it all the time!"
I have seen many in the stores for kids and so I thought I would give my opinion. I did some research on the internet and read where one mom said, kids under 12 should never use a sewing machine because it is so dangerous. So, keep in mind this is only my opinion don't come back and sue me if your child loses a finger.

Sears has one for $99.00 and it is so cute and Pink
Costco had one the other day in the toy section I can't remember what the price was and can't find it online, but I remember thinking this is actually a great little machine. Costco also sells a Brother that is $149.99 that is a great machine for the money if you are interested in getting one for you and your child.
AK does sew on my nice machine now, because it is always set up. But for the longest time she would sew on my $77 Wal-mart machinee that I bought in New Orleans with my friend Mindy. I have to say that Brother was a workhorse. It was my sewing machine for the entire time I had my sewing business. Also Walmart always has a sewing machine super cheap the morning after thanksgiving for their 3 hour sale.
My suggestion is to buy a real machine vs. the toy machine. Your child will get less frustrated if the machine can do the work for you.
My huge plug of where to buy a nice machine or even a entry level one is
PoncoSew&Vac in Penn.. They have incredible customer service. Tasha, Jennifer and Cristin have all bought machines from them, I think would say they would do it again. I keep them linked on my sidebar.
If you have any questions about getting a machine for you or for your child for Christmas let me know, but I am a huge fan of seeing kids sew. It gives them great confidence to use something they make.
Also if you do buy give it as a gift have lots of fabric around and even a project for them to experiment with.
Happy Sewing.

I just bought a singer sewing machine from Costco for Christmas, a real one, that sews and all. I am so excited. I am going to have a friend teach both of us how to sew.

Kristi, I love that AK did that all on her own!! So cute! I can also completely relate to the "cute sassy voice", which I have been hearing lots of lately at my house.

my 5 year old son jack really got into sewing his halloween costume with me this year. it's giving me inspiration to leave my machine out, rather than tucking it in the back of the closet!

i'm enjoying your blog things (found you via amy rue's blog). thanks!

What a creative girl...I will have to give you a call when I get around to buying a sewing machine, the Cotco one does sound like a good deal! I am hoping to start a sewing class with my ward in January if Bevan's schedhule permits.

What a wonderful idea! My Mom sewed, and oh how I wish I would have learned! She always tried to teach me, I guess it's never to late to learn.

I whole heartedly agree. I started sewing on one of my mom's extra sewing machines (a great old Bernina that used to belong to an LDS Ward house) when I was about 9 years old. I have always enjoyed sewing and find so much catisfaction in knowing when I see something really cute that I can make that!

I love that she did that on her own! Did she use a pattern? I'm totally impressed. I would probably be intimidated and afraid it wouldn't turn out right, and she just dove in! You must be showing her the way.

I was interested in sewing back when I was 11-12 years old. My friend and I used to make little pillows and easy projects, I just wish my mom had taken advantage of that interest and helped me move on to bigger and better projects. If that had happened I might not be such a sew-a-phobe now.

I actually have a machine for Jessica but I sew so little that I haven't broken it out for her. Thanks for the inspiration!

Annie Kate is a child wonder--sewing her own skirt and bag at age 7. She looks so darn cute in those pictures. Wahoo for her, and you for giving her the confidence.
