a true gift

Jill sent me this book a week ago and it was such a great gift because it will keep on giving everytime I read it. I loved this book. It made me really think. The night I finished it, I so bad wanted to wake Jeff up and talk about it, but instead just sat and looked back at many of my quotes. I feel like I marked half the book! Here are a few.

"Nothing feeds the center so much as creative work, even kinds like cooking and sewing. Baking bread, weaving cloth, putting up preserves, teaching and singing to children, must have been far more nourishing than being the family chauffeur or shopping at super-markets, or doing housework with mechanical aids. The art and craft of housework has diminished;"

"Except for the child, woman's creation is so often invisible, especially today"

"Woman instinctively want to give, yet resents giving herself in small pieces. ... I believe that what woman resents is not so much giving herself in pieces as giving herself purposelessly"

"The more one gives, the more one has to give - like milk in the breast."

"When one is a stranger to oneself then one is estranged from others too. If one is out of touch with oneself, then one cannot touch others."

"I remember again, ironically, that today more of us in America than anywhere else in the world have the luxury of choice between simplicity and complication of life."

"I would like to achieve a state of inner spiritual grace from which I could function and give as I was meant to in the eye of God."

the entire chapter of the "Oyster Bed" it is about marriage and is incredible.
I could go on and on. I loved this book and would be interested to read an unmarked copy next year at this time and see what different things stand out to me.
Thanks Jill for giving me a great gift.
My next book is "The Color of Water"

Don't you just love it when a book is so good you want to talk about it? For some reason, I haven't gotten to this book yet. I have a copy in my bedroom and I will have to move it to the top of my list. I love the quotes, and loved the ones Jill posted too. What am I waiting for?

I'm so thrilled that you loved this book so much. I think it's a perfect gift for ANY woman alive, and a must read as well.

I also marked tons of the book and couldn't stop referring to it back in February on my blog. I wish I could order mass amounts of this book and gift it to all the women I know.

I loved reading your quotes, thanks for posting about this. I want to reread it.

I read this book years ago and loved it. I am inspired to read it again since my life is quite a bit different now than it was then. Very interesting idea to reread an unmarked one at a later date and see what strikes you differently. I should to that with my scriptures! I'm sure it would be very telling as to my state of mind.

This is a book that is on my must read list. I just finished Neal A. Maxwells biography and this was one of his all time favorite books.

Few things are better than a great book! I just finished reading "Mere Christianity," by C.S. Lewis. It is beautifully and plainly written. Almost every page of my book has at least one underlined passage. I love his messages on faith, hope, forgiveness, charity and pride.

One particularly fitting quote for this election week-
"All that thinking will be mere moonshine unless we realize that nothing but the courage and unselfishness of individuals is ever going to make any system work properly."

Any chance of meeting up with you in NYC tomorrow or Friday? :-)

GFTS is one of my favorite books, I posted about it in September...I love that no matter what stage in life I am at, it has given me so much to think about...

'The Color of Water' -- also is a must read (but disturbing and sad)...It gives you a lot to think about -- It affected me so much, that I had to talk about it after I read it! Not all books leave you needing to talk it out! :)

I love that book!! Really makes you think. :) And I am reading The Color of Water right now. I borrowed it from my MIL. Well, she actually said I could keep it. I really like it so far!! Love the Christmas Pajamas by the way. Oh, and I've been meaning to tell you, a local store has a line of Pink Christmas colored items (all hot pink and lime green)...things like a table runner, cups, plates, sheets, etc. It made me think of you!! :)

I love to read and because of your recommendations I think I may pick this one up.

Thank you for taking the time to right down your thoughts about it.

Oh! I love this book! I read the first time after my son went on his mission and again after my sister died. It meant something different to me each time. It made me want to keep doing the things that made me happy, even if they didn't seem to matter to anyone else. Thank you for talking about this book. It's time to reread it again!

Gift from the Sea is one of my favorite books - I try to reread it at the beginning of every year. I love knowing that I will get something new from it every time I read it. I can remember reading it for the first time as a young mother balancing children, graduate school, etc. and thinking that it had just been published. I was amazed when I realized when it was first published. Truths are timeless.
