We made it the next morning to our tour of Independence Hall. What an amazing place. What amazing history and wonderful events that took place there. Annie Kate was all ears and even asked questions afterwards. It is emotional for me to be where these great men were. We all learned some great stories but my favorite was of Benjamin Franklin and his comment on the engraved sun on the chair that sat at the front of the room. take a minute to read here.
The bell ringing from the tower was a beautiful sound. This was a great photo of Annie Kate looking up right as it started ringing. It silenced all of us outside. Of course the Liberty Bell now sits protected on the other side of the street. The girls in front of the Liberty Bell
We then had of course more yummy food. We got three pretzels with yummy mustard, an incredible hot dog that rivals Ben's chili bowl and a pink frosted doughnut with sprinkles for Caroline, all for $4.00. A photo could not be taken because they were gone in seconds. We are still dreaming of that yummy goodness!
We went back to the hotel and packed up. I told my new friend at the front desk thanks for all his help and that we were headed to some antique stores on Pine Street and he recommended Famous 4th Street deli.
I found a great paper store on Pine Street called "Paper on Pine" it had some great treasures for sure.
We went to the deli and it was yet another fun family experience. They brought a huge bowl of pickles to the table like chips and salsa at a Mexican restaurant. They were the best pickles I have ever had. Jeff had the French toast , It was like a whole loaf of bread! and I had a Ruben. I could only eat half of a half. It was yummy and one would think all we do is eat.
So on our way out of town which would have been 2 hours south we decided to go 2 hours east and get dessert.... Hershey Chocolate that is. oh yes on a whim we drove to the Hershey Chocolate factory. Are we crazy or what?
More to come....

It's so cool that so many historical sites are so accessible to you on the east coast. I just love spirit of the east. Like the beauty shop you showed on yesterday's post (which for some reason didn't come up until now for me). I can't wait to be there. 7 months I'll be in DC. I finally posted about it on my blog.
Enjoy our fabulous vacation.
I LOVE your field trips. Even more glad you share them with us. We'll be back East several times in the next few years and I keep thinking, "Oh...this would be a fun thing to search out while we're there." Thanks...you're a walking tour director.
thanks for your comments on my blog about DC. how completely neat that you just get up and go on cool trips like this one to philadelphia! i love your blog! :)
happy new year!
I love your spontaneity - it's particularly cool that you do it with young children. Your days are so fun, and I think it's neat you live em to their fullest and funnest.
I am dying over the French toast! That is insanely huge! Sounds like such a fun place. I would love to have dessert 2 hours east and end up at the Hershey's Chocolate Factory. That is my kind of place!
Could your kids give my kids lessons on travel (while smiling)? Mine get so tired I need to figure something out to have more fun!
Have I ever told you I LOVE your blog? It truly is one of my favorites...and the pictures are what make it even more real!
Thanks so much for sharing your trip with us...I think we'll all learn something just by reading about your trips!
I hope that you blow up and frame that darling photo of your youngest looking up at the bell. THAT is such a treasured photo for a parent! I love that you are so spontaneous and that your children inspire you to do more, and not hold you back because they are so young. What a gift you are giving them! A thirst for when they are older! Wonderful!
Seems like your young children have done more, seen more, and been to more places than most adults! That is really awesome -taking the opportunity and not waiting for all the excuses! Love it.
Sista #1(commented above me) and I are from a large family -we grew up at Disneyland! Not literally, but lived there, so we went a lot.
I think everyone needs to experience that magical place, BUT love your 'fieldtrips' of just sites and history & fun education! way cool.-ciao
it's me again! Price cream parlor is my sista #1. We have a lot!
When we went to Disneyland, sea world, the beach, etc.- when we were young - we would call out our #, when we gathered or got in the van - not leave anyone behind!hahaha
(it's about 8pm here -time to party with the kids! I'll probably fall asleep first!)-ciao
What a great trip. Kind of sad that we have been to visit my parents many times (suburb of Philly) and I have never taken my kids to see the historical sites in Philadelphia. Maybe next time.
I love how much you are taking advantage of all the great things to do in the East. Isn't it cool how much you can see and do without traveling very far?
That french toast is something else!
that top picture thats black and white it so cute! xoxo
