Challenge - Embrace your Geekness

This challenge was a total challenge for me. Even though I feel that I am computer savvy, I don't really feel like there is much that I know. I kept telling myself today, "Kristi are you kidding yourself?" I feel like I am good a bunch of things but the master at none. That kind of bugs me about myself that I don't think I am more of a computer nerd - I guess the more you know the more you learn you don't know.

Then it hit me what my area would be....

Smugmug
! I love, love, love this website. The cute green smiley face is their logo. I have been using their site since January 22, 2003 at 10:28 pm EST. Because of Smugmug all my photos are organized and so easy to find. I can share them or keep them private. I can order prints or keep them digital. I can order a back up disk or let them hang on to them for me.
Whenever I come home from the day, my photo card goes straight into the computer and I download to smugmug before I go to bed. I know my way around their site and seriously use it almost daily. Everyone in my husband's family has a page and we can keep up with each other cross country. When Jill started using smugmug is when the site really opened up to me. She taught me how to make my own categories and organize my photos. Their company is so awesome and anytime I have ever emailed a question I always get an answer back that day. They are down to earth real people!
I recently taught a digital storage class for some 50+ women at my church and I could not stop talking about Smugmug. (I kept promising them I don't work for them and this was not a sales pitch)

So that is where my geekiness is in the computer area.

**How do you store your digital photos?**
**What keeps you from using smugmug?**
**What do you love about Smugmug if you use it?**

Kristi, I use Shutterfly. I like it for the same reasons that you like Smugmug. I had never heard of Smugmug before you and Jill.
My birthday ribbon arrived today. Thank you, thank you!! Too sweet and I love the innovative packaging. The chocolate brown ribbon is my favorite.

natasha - oh my heavens i knew it was late but it must have got sent to France first and then back,,, that seemed to take awhile. it better have had enough postage on there, i hope you didn't have to pay to get your own present - or then i will feel really bad.
i am glad you finally got it.

It had plenty of postage and was such a great surprise. No reason to feel badly at all - it just stretched out the birthday goodness all that much longer for me! Post Karina mail is a whole different game. . . it may have sat in New Orleans for God only knows how long! I love, love every last inch of the ribbon!!

I am interested to learn more from you and Jill about smugmug. The first question I would have for you - is it EASY to learn my way around? I am not computer savy at all!
Great SPT - funny green face!

lisa, it is so EASY. when i started using it i never used the internet or anything. i credit it to teaching my way around html and computer lingo.

I love Smugmug, too. The founder (a "kid" our age) was in my old ward and you would never guess he owns such an amazing company. He's just a normal guy. And I can vouch that it's easy or else I couldn't be using it. It's also the only way I know how to blog (upload pics to smugmug first) so thank you Smugmug!

Kristi, this is so cute! (It looks just like the Smugmug logo!) I love using Smugmug and am glad Jill talked me into signing up. I tried to give my dad a subscription to it and he wasn't interested... Now I don't know what I did without it. And you're right, their customer service is wonderful!

Thanks for this tip. I have trouble keeping up with all my digital pictures...uploading them to my computer, organizing them, backing them up and printing them. I need a better way...Smugmug just might be the answer for me.

I need to take the tim eto learn about one of these digital places to store photos. I have lost control of my photos and have to search far and wide to find them. I think I need to take the dive and do it.

I really appreciate that information. I'm kind of new to taking digital pictures, and my sister asked me where I store my pictures, and I don't! I just print them and then delete them. I guess I didn't realize there was another way. I'm going to go check it out right now. Thanks so much for the info.

After your post I am so motivated to start using smugmug. I love that they will back up your photos. I have so much fear of losing my photos.

I'd stumbled on Smugmug a while ago, but opted for Snapfish because it seemed to be British. It's probably international though. However, I can navigate better around Smugmug, so I may swap over.

What ever would we all have done without digital cameras and online albums???

Your picture is funny. The Smugmug logo is so simple and cute, isn't it?

I've debated between Smugmug and Shutterfly since I like making Shutterfly albums. What to do. I need to commit to something and quick! Right now I'm just using Picasa.

OKI use Kodak Gallery...just because I always have. What do you pay for a 4 x 6 print? I guess I could investigate that myself. Maybe I will give it a go. Just something else for thought..you are always doing great and interesting things with your kids...I just by chance was at Sams Club and picked up a bag of Baked Cheetos. They had Shrek on the front I don't care for Shrek but...THEY TURN YOUR TONGUE GREEN! My boys had a ball at lunch. I will be posting it hopefully tonight on my blog but just something fun to keep things interesting. I thought it was silly. Thanks for the smugmug tips.

I use iPhoto because I use a Mac and Mac's rule!!!!!!!! (Okay there is my SPT geekiness right there. My devotion to Apple is pretty rabid. Almost as much as Ohio State.I should post about it.) I love looking at your photos on Smugmug however. I'm too paranoid about putting my photos on a server to use it. But the idea of having a back-up is really nice.

I started using Smugmug and still use it, but found it so so so slow when downloading photos. To the point of three days this last trip. I believe that it took so long because I didn't colapse the downloading page when surfing the internet while I waite for the pictures to download. Of course, I didn't realize this until day three of downloading! What are some hints to making the download process quicker?

HOw much does Smugmug cost??

I really need to get on the stick and use one of these photo storages. I hear about them all the time, mostly from you and Jill, and I love that I can go on Smug Mug and see your pictures of the city. FUN!

are you putting your card directly into a card reader or your camera into the computer?

Mrs. McDaniel said...

I've never heard of smugmug & I thought it was something way above my head when I saw you using it, but I need something to keep my photos organized.

I'll have to check it out.

I use shutterfly because I like the 12x12 photo books and I like that they ship to Canada. I haven't ever checked out smug mug.

Michelle Alley said...

Kristi - I put it into a card reader I've hooked up through a USB port. It's a 22 in 1 Card reader. Is camera to computer better? I know when I minimize the downloading screen, it seems to go faster. Otherwise, it's quite the annoying wait!

yes, i use smugmug too! my friend's family started the business, so i'm lucky enough to have someone on the inside to ask all my questions to, right down the street! and ps they are the coolest family!

I've never heard of smugmug. Sounds like a good idea though. I just keep mine on my computer by date or event and year. I just upload the ones I want to print to shutterfly.

I'm so glad you introduced me to Smugmug, I love it and use it every day as well. I didn't realize that qualified me as a computer geek, but if so I will gladly claim the title.
