General Conference Kits

This weekend is the bi-annual world wide conference for my church. It is pretty exciting. It is broadcast out of Salt Lake City, Utah into over 78 languages all over the world. Some of the languages are:
Tamil
Apache
Cebuano (my brother speaks this!)
Efik
Hmong
Kekchi
Marshallese
Papiamento
I don't even know where most of these are from but thought it gave a great representation of how worldwide the LDS church is.

It is 6 hours for Saturday and Sunday for all the church members. Some members are able to get it in their homes, but most watch it at a local church where it is broadcast or listen to it on the radio or Internet. Many members also have to wait the following month to have it sent out it print.
This conference will be the first for our new prophet, Thomas S. Monson. The leaders of the church speak on a wide variety of subjects to strengthen the members of our church. Some of the topics from last fall were.

being slow to anger
living by faith not fear
being a mother
service
the power to change
a broken heart

my friend Jill shared this great idea of making kits for the women we visit teach while they watch or listen to General Conference.

I made 7 this year and hope I can get out to deliver them today. Here are a few things I put in them this year.

some yellow note pads tied on with yellow ribbon and a fresh new pen for note taking. I wrote on the cover of each pad,

"did you know that yellow is President Monson's favorite color?

a pack of Kleenex for that talk that really gets to you
a tube of pringles
junior mints
microwave popcorn
Evian Water bottle (they were on sale and oh so cute and pink)

I put a sponge in a little Ziploc and put a note it in that says,

"General Conference - Soak it all in!"

i bought a pack of strip post it notes and put a little tag in a Ziploc that says

"here are some little tabs to mark the scriptures read in conference"

I thought this would be a great way to go back and read some of the scriptures that were used in talks.

and thank goodness for ribbon and cellophane and little cute notes to make it all come together.

Having Easter be after General Conference this year is perfect because I got these awesome felt baskets for 75% off which made each of my basket, with contents just a hair under $5.00! That is a deal. (it helps having the ribbon outlet)

did you make Jill's General conference baskets too?

do you get to sit home and watch it or do you have to go to a building to do so?

I so wanted to do this for conference, but time just got away from me. I am definately going to try in October! Your baskets look so great; what a treat to be visit taught by such a crafty lady!!

We listen or watch on the computer on Saturday and then we go to the church on Sunday. It is too much with my kids at their ages to sit at church on both days.

We pipe into Conference on byu tv through the internet. It's the perfect way to watch Conference with kids!

I love your Conference Kits! I'll have to mark these for October! I did make some Conference Activity kits for our primary kids. They were really excited - I wonder how many of them saved it for Conference or dove into it at home.

What a thoughtful idea. Your ladies are so lucky and will be so happy. I didn't know that yellow is Pres. Monson's favorite color!

We are going to church for the am sessions on both days. I printed out some kits from sugar doodle for the kids to do because T is gone until Saturday night.

I have so say that I enjoy going to church (usually) to watch it. There's something to be said for getting in your church clothes and gathering together with others to hear the great words. It gives me strength.

I'm sad that I didn't do Conference baskets this time around, but I just barely got my visiting teaching route yesterday for my new ward and time definitely got away from me. Such a great idea.

We watch conference at home, and I am looking forward to a weekend in our jammies! (well, except for Marc and Max on Sat. night)

Gosh, cellophane just tops it all off, doesn't it? I'm a bit of a sucker for ribbon and cellophane, I'm afraid. You could wrap a house brick up in it, and I'd get excited.

But these are so pretty, and yes it's all such a good deal. You must be thrilled! I hope you managed to get them delivered okay.

I just finished my General Conference baskets a few minutes ago, and decided since I have many less actives on my route, to give some to the people in our ward who get the least recognized (the bishop and RS president)..I also added extra gum and wrote "hope you get something "EXTRA" out of conference this year." and I also added a loaf of home-made bread since I have a lady allergic to cinnamon and can't have cinnamon rolls. THANKS JILL AND KRISTI for the great ideas!!!

Kristi,

I LOVE THIS! I seriously was thinking this afternoon - "ooo, I should do a little something for the girls I visit teach to get excited for conference. I'll have to check and see if Kristi has anything cute up her sleeve" ... and POOF! YOU DO! You are magic, thanks for sharing the love.

I haven't made my baskets yet, but have big plans for being up early tomorrow before Conference starts (why am I always doing this at the last minute?). Thanks for posting your great ideas, I love all the details on your items. Also, you're a genius (yet again) for finding those cute spring baskets to put the stuff in. I wish I would have thought of that when everything was on clearance!

you NEVER cease to amaze me. good thing i have a good sefl esteem or i would crumble at your pure awesomeness.

i have a really neat "packet" for kids for this years conference. i would love to send it to you. i will search your profile for an email address but in case i don't find it email me for it. never2pink at yahoo dot com. i think your kids will like it and its an easy rpint and staple together kind of thing (though no doubt you will make it WAY cuter than it is!)

So great Kristi. My favorite part is including President Monson's favorite color with the note pad and ribbon. Very clever.

I'm really looking forward to watching conference. Have a great weekend.

Ok, I have loved this idea every time you or Jill post about it, and then I forget about it until too late. I love the thought process that went into your baskets this year!

We watch it over the internet on byu.tv

Kristi you are amazing. I wish I would have read this a few days earlier! What a great idea! Well, maybe in the fall.

This was the first year we've watched conference on the internet. We're weird and don't get cable T.V. So we had a picknic up in our loft while we sat around the computer desk. Tomorrow we'll try and hit one session at the Temple Center. I'm really excited about that! It is so different not being in UT and having conference blaring on all the T.V.s and all the radios.

Happy watching!

How fun are YOU! Thanks for the ideas! We get to watch conference at home in our jammies. But to make it more fun, for the Sat session today, we made a fort/tent in the living room, kind of like King Benjamin's people in the Book of Mormon set up tents to hear him speak. We enjoyed a picnic in it, too.

Thank you for the wonderful idea! I took mine over right before Saturday morning session and I am glad I did, I think she was feeling overwhelmed with life and needed a woman to talk to. It's nice to visit, even when it is not a scheduled appointment. So thank you!

We are lucky--we get to watch conference at home in our jammies (well at least for morning session)!

What a great idea! Love the tag you designed on the outside of the basket. I'll have to put something like this together for next conference.
