Last year we picked Italy, but our free military flight had a different plan for us and we found ourselves in Spain.
This year we have high hopes to find our way to Belgium, the Netherlands and France - but the Azores are always an option too.
We have done lots of research for our trip and our kids have looked through thousands of pages of art in hopes that if they will get to the Louvre they will say "hey Mom I saw that in that book at home"
Caroline has learned all about Vincent van Goh and can even act out him cutting of his ear. Annie Kate is beyond thrilled considering the fact she did a project in school this past year about the Mona Lisa and has painted her own masterpiece and is trying to get it into the Smithsonian. Sally Jane is just carrying around the flyer we picked up at the military base about Disneyland Paris.
My research has consisted of watching "An American in Paris" and "The girl with a pearl earring" twice this week.
So we shall see where we end up. I have tested my mobile blogging so if anyone is interested I will update our status.
My pre-packing has consisted of packing 4 bags of electronics and cords. It is amazing how many electronics we bring each year and all the chargers and cords. We are always glad that we did so I can't complain.
Ok off to get everything else ready - big wide world here we come.
Keep your fingers crossed for Europe!

I LOVE how you travel like this every year. I love your attitude of being open to change and adventure.
Happy Trails, wherever you land!
Bon Voyage! Have a great journey!
Oh the Azores! My husband's family is from there!!! How I would LOVE to go!
Sounds like no matter what you guys are going to have a marvelous time!
I'm so excited for you! It's such an amazing opportunity for your family to get to do this, and I can't believe it's already your 3rd summer going to Europe!
It's also great that you can blog from there. I will be checking in for updates regularly. Make sure you eat lots of pastries!
Oh how fun!!! Wherever you end up will be great, but I LOVE,LOVE, LOVE Paris!! So much to do, so much to see. It's like New York, only bigger, better and much more history. You could spend all your time there. I'd love it if you did mobile updates so I can live vicariously through you.
PS)are you going to do pink christmas sign ups before you leave?
use please mobile blog so that I too can take an European vacation!
Have a fabulous trip! We miss our European travels. Just moved back from 3 years in Germany - we miss our adventures overseas. Can't wait to read about yours.
In case anyone is interested... yeah, right! I am so excited for you guys!
And I love The Girl in Hyacinth Blue.
Oh Kristi, I LOVE LOVE LOVE PARIS. The Louvre was my very favorite. The sculpture section there is fantastic (this coming from the girl who is not into sculptures and had plans to completely skip that section--it ended up being my favorite part).
My parents live in Brussels right now and that city is beautiful. There is also a darling town called Brugge that is a great place to go. It has a very old Europe small town feel to it. It was my husband's favorite. You can get to it by train from Brussels in like an hour or two. Its a great day trip place.
Whatever you do, if you get to Belgium you must get a sugar waffle from a street vendor. I'm telling you, there is nothing like them. You can get them all gooped up with stuff like whipped cream and such, but they are the best plain...nice and crispy and sweet. YUM!!!
What a fun adventure - I can't wait to hear all about it. Have a great trip and make lots of memories.
Of COURSE we're interested in your updates. I'll definitely be vacationing vicariously through you. Hurray! Hug all your littles for us.
travel safely!
I love, love how you do this....the adventure, the whimsy...I cannot wait to hear all about it!
So exciting!!! Keep us posted as "I" live through your great travel logs!
Belgium! Of all the places that's where I would recommend.... Granted I served there, so I am partial, but Holland and Belgium are two underrated countries in my opinion. Granted, you can't really go wrong with France.. Either way, Brugges is beautiful. You need to buy a Liegios waffle (DELISH!) and stick with Galler chocolate- it's the best. I'm so jealous though. I hope you all have a lot of fun!!
