Advent Aholic
I am a advent-aholic. I could have 20 in my house if I would let myself. Thesee are some we had this year. This one my Mom got for the girls from Mt. Vernon. It is a view from the Potomac side of the house. Each door opens up and then teaches you something about the history of the home. This is one all of the YW and leaders made while I was living in TN. It was probably a little too intense, I think only 6 girls finished. But the girls learned a lot of skills on the way. Each number is hand stitched and the items are Christmas graphics from Two peas in a Bucket on shrinky dinks. It is made with wool felt that had been shrunk and washed. here is the back of mine that I embroidered. My girls came to YW with me every week (not by choice) and so Annie Kate would color with the girls and wanted to make one of her own. it is out of felt and puffy painted numbers. She hand stitched the star and sewed the rest with a machine. She colored all of her shrinky dink pieces. The back of hers. I love that it has the date she can remember how much she did at such a young age.
this is my favorite one I have ever made and the girls favorites. It is a copy of one Jeff had growing up as a kid. I even think it was pink and white. I was visiting his family in Seattle and his sister Debbie and I decided to each make one in black. David drew the tree for us we copied the pockets and size of the original. It has rustic bells to hold the ornaments on.
I use the Hallmark miniature ornaments. It took me many years to get 24 of them. They are about $7.00 each and so I had to wait to find them super cheap and my Mom gave me a lot too. Each ornament is so detailed and well made. It is fun to see which ones are Annie Kates favorites.
But this is by far my favorite and why I had to write about my different advents. Imagine me crying why I am typing because I am.
6 years ago this was my Christmas present from my friend Mindy. It is a quilt that has 25 pockets in it. Each has an envelope with letters from different people in my life. Many of them now bloggers that you may know and all of my family. I can't even imagine the work that went into making the quilt and getting the letters all by December 1st. Our first year in Nashville (Jeff was an intern) was really hard, much harder than we expected. Jeff had a horrible rotation that month had few days off and was going in at 3:30 am every morning. I must have had many cry fests with Mindy on the phone. This advent saved me! Everyday I read the greatest note from people I loved. Year after year I hang it up and read each letter every year. It was a true labor of love and I am so fortunate to have it. Mindy, I am sure I have never adequately thanked you for the Christmas gift that keeps on giving!! I love it!

I remember that quilt. Mindy is just plain amazing.
Oh, wow! These are all amazing, but the pocket quilt with the letters ... what a beautiful gift. Thanks for sharing this. It's so fun to see all the love and good there is in the world -- it's so heartwarming and inspiring!
These advent calendars are amazing, you're actually making me want to sew! I can't even imagine getting a quilt advent with letters from people, what a fabulous idea and amazing gift. Where do you keep all of these advents?
I love that you have a collection of advent calendars, now I want to do that too! And the quilt one is definitely the best. What an amazingly thoughtful gift -- I love that it keeps on giving every year.
