can't feel myself running

There are a few songs on my IPOD that when listening to them I can not feel myself running. I am NOT a runner but desperately want to be one (the photo above is not me!)
The few songs are:
  1. Kelly Clarkston - Since U were gone
  2. the new song from my all time favorite Keith Urban
  3. some Hillary Duff song (so embarrassing)
  4. an Outkast song Jeff put on there
But that is really it and I realize I need some more songs that make it so I can't feel myself running. Because when I feel myself running I usually stop, thus my problem.

So I need to update my IPOD and I would love to know what song or songs make you MOVE!

Hahaha! I love that! I feel the same way about a few songs too. One is a Red Hot Chili Peppers song, it's probably the only one I know from them, but can't think of the title right now. (I'm humming it & it makes NO sense).
Another one is Walk Away by Kelly Clarkson.
I love to pick up speed to the music & can't even feel it!-ciao

Oh I love this post!! I too have songs that make me move, mostly b/c they are on my current work out playlist. Even my youngest will say "that is your running song, mama!" I have a dance remix of Kelly Clarkson on mine, too! I have a great remix of Whitney Houston's (before the breakdown!) "Your Love is My Love" and it is a great motivator b/c I always think of my girls when I hear it. I want to be healthy mom and good role model for them. Madonna's "Ray of Light," too. I also love The Biggest Loser theme song, "Proud." I have the slower version as my warm up/cooldown and the dance version about mid-way. The message of that song is so motivating for me-- What have you done today to make yourself proud? Other songs are the Mission Impossible theme (helpful for Mondays!!) and for the 80s girls I have a few oldies-- including Depeche Mode I"Just Can't Get Enough." Great question, Kristy. I can't wait to get other ideas!

i've been listening to pink "hazard to myself," no doubt "hella good" and basement jaxx "where's your head at". i always struggle to create playlists like this, because i don't typically listen to this kind of music. and yet, i just know i burst out loud singing along while i'm walking, and i don't even realize it. my neighbors are all probably snickering at me!

oh, and my fave cool down song right now is "100 years" by five for fighting

everything pink! said...

I do have that five for fighting as my cool down along with my josh groban song it is a good one.

boy Kelly Clarkston makes the list huh!

girls keep them coming. i will type these up and repost them so it will be easier for everyone to write them down.

Anything from the 80's! It reminds me when I was thin and carefree. ha-ha! Also movie soundtracks. I'll look at some titles and actually try and post them. Run on!

Kristi - now you're talking! Running is my thing and it's even better when you have good tunes! For me, anything with a good beat and clean lyrics is great. I am not really not hip AT ALL when it comes to music and can listen to the same song over and over and over again while I run. I once ran 3 miles just listening to "Accidentally in Love" by Counting Crows. Weird that it doesn't bother me to do that ... Anyway, on the mix I made for my last marathon I have the following (I won't put the whole list ... just a sampling):
* Upside Down - Jack Johnson
* Happy Girl - Martina McBride
* One Shining Moment - David Barrett (March Madness theme music)
* Let is Slide - Keane
* Don't Stop Believing
* Beautiful Day - U2
* Beautiful Life - Fisher
* This is It - Kenny Loggins
* More Than a Feeling -
* If You Really Love Me - Stevie Wonder (I know, I know ...)
* September - Earth, Wind, and Fire
* Dream On - Aerosmith
* Unwritten - Natasha Bedingfield
* Song of the South -Alabama
* These Are Days - 10,000 Maniacs
* We Are the Champions - Queen
* The Riddle - Five For Fighting (cool down/warm up)
* 100 Years - Five For Fighting (warm up/cool down)
* The Color Purple - broadway musical (warm up/cool down)
* Our Town - James Taylor (because he's my favorite and I firmly believe he must be included in every mix I make (warm up/cool down)
* CIty Beneath the Sea - Harry Connick, Jr. (warm up/cool down)
* Oh! And becaue I am cheesy, I throw in a little Rocky, too :)

Happy, happy running, Kristi!

Do not be embarrassed about the Hilary Duff song. I love Hilary Duff. Ok, maybe we should both be a little embarrassed.

I find that just having music speeds me up--even if it's slow music. I don't have anything that I listen to in particular. I just like to put my iPod on shuffle and let myself be surprised.

I just lost my comment, drat! I love Shawna's list, very good. I love anything by Jimmy Buffett, my husbands sweat music is different that what I would use but I use his ipod, so I'm kind of stuck. Anything by Gwen S. would work too. I'm looking forward to your compilation.

Oh, I love this post. I've been working on the same thing. I love Shawna's list - thanks for sharing that. Here's what I have come up with so far:

Dreams by The Cranberries
Lady by Lenny Kravitz
Chicago by Mat Kearney
Nothing Left to Lose by Mat Kearney
Soak Up the Sun by Sheryl Crow
My Doorbell by The White Stripes (I make no guarantees as to the lyrics on that one - it's one my husband has on his running list, but it does make you want to move.)

It's Beginning To Get to Me - Snow Patrol
Open Your Eyes - Snow Patrol
Fighter - Christina Aguilera
Put It Behind You - Keane
Leaving So Soon - Keane
Little Miss Can't Be Wrong - Spin Doctors
Gimme Some Lovin' - The Spencer Davis Group
Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode
Mamma Mia - Abba
Chocolate - Snow Patrol

My husband also likes The Scientist by Coldplay for running. I love the song, but I'm not sure it's as driving as I need for exercising, but you can give it a try. It might be a good warm up/cool down song.

Hope that helps! I'm right there with you - having dreams of being a runner, but I am totally just starting.

i worship my iPod so here's my list:

New Justin Timberlake CD
New Gwen Stefani CD-my fav right now

a few of U2
a few of beyonce

mainly pop music keeps me going..

I just got an ipod for Christmas (I know, a little behind the game). I got it with the intent of using it for running...haven't quite gotten there yet, but I am so glad for the song suggestions! Thanks for the post!

I'm thinking about this, but love knowing what songs get other people moving. I've made some playlists (like the one that helped get me out of my funk a couple weeks ago), but I'm not sure about songs that make me want to run.

michelle said...

I don't think there's a song on earth that would make me feel like I couldn't feel myself running... looks like you got some great ideas though. I would second Sheryl Crow for upbeat music.

"Pump It" by the Black Eye Peas is a good running song for me.
Thats the only one I can think of off the top of my head though. Music is really important to keep me going also, especially since i go on a treadmill...I can get bored very easily and need to keep myself entertained.

Ok, the Whitney remix I mentioned earlier is actually "My Love is Your Love!" I did not want to confuse anyone who may be looking for it.

Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" is another good message song...

And for fun, Tito Nieves "I Like It Like That"

I had a cd a while back with popular 80s songs remixed...hmm,where did that go?

Anonymous said...

Doug has the greatest "running" mix on his ipod. I am afraid to even post the songs because so many people dislike my music. But here are a few

Blur Blur-"song #2"
O.K. Go-"Here it goes again" (that treadmill song)
Smashmouth-Walking on the sun
O.K. Go-"Do what you want"
Lenny Kravtz-"Where are we running?"
Black Eyed Peas-"Pump It"
INXS-"Pretty Vegas"
R.E.M.-"End of the World"
Gorillaz-"Feel Good"
U2-"Vertigo"
Better Than Ezra-"Juicy"
Grey's Anatomy 2-#11 on soundtrack

Hopefully you won't be appauled at this list. But these are some of our very favorites. Oh, and we are Hillary Duff lovers too. We went to her concert last year at the rodeo. We also love Hannah Montana. Sorry about the long winded post :)

Hello all, as a UK girl I simply had to comment on this post as I don't recognize some of the tracks you're all referring to.
I don't exercise, unless prancing around with a 4 yr old and bouncing a 10m old on your hip counts...
But for what it's worth, I do found the following UK tracks quite uplifting and inspiring. They're by no means my All Time Greats, but they spring to mind:

Spiller ‘Groovejet’
Primitives ‘Crash’
The Coral ‘In the Morning’
The Cardigans ‘Sick & Tired’
Badly Drawn Boy ‘All Possibilities’
Goldfrapp ‘Ooh La La’
Sugababes ‘Push the Button’
Edwyn Collins ‘A Girl Like You’
Supergrass ‘Moving’
Opus III ‘Fine Day’
The Orb ‘Little Fluffy Clouds’
Aztec Camera ‘Oblivious’
St Etienne ‘You’re in a Bad Way’
The Communards ‘You Are My World’
Dario G ‘Sunchyme’
Cornershop ‘Brimful of Asha’ (Norman Cook remix)

In terms of songs that help you to unwind, I got a lump in my throat listening to Simply Red's ‘Home’ today. Such lovely sentiments in that song.

Happy running everyone (and fab site, Kristi)! xx

I love so many of those songs. Kelly and Shawna-- I am updating my iPod right now.

I am really embarrassed to say this, but I listen to Madonna-- Something to Remember and Then Immaculate Collection when I work out. Wow. I'm not going to admit to anything else. (I listen to Celine Dion when I clean).

What a great post to open up the conversation of music. Some songs just make you want to run. I am very particular about what I listen to when I run. It has to have a quick tempo to make me keep up my pace. I won't bore you with my list of music that is too hard for your taste, but good luck with the running! I hope you get the perfect running mix setup to motivate you.

Counting Crows-Accidentally in Love
Keith urban- Better Life, Somebody like you
Alphaville- Techno remix of Forever young

Great idea.

I have have to go back and look at all the ideas. I feel this way when I listen to Snow Patrol, Keane, Justin Timberlake, The Fray. I love that feeling because I'm not a huge fan of running.

This post is perfect for me. I am not a runner either, but have recently just started and am enjoying it. I am running a half marathon in May. I am embarrassed to say but the music that keeps me going is 80's rock, like Bon Jovi or Led Zeplin, or current rock like Kid Rock. It keeps me moving and I need all the help I can get.

Thanks for this post b/c I'm just barely putting together a workout list. A few I like so far...Breathe by Anna Nalick, Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield, These Words (I Love You, I Love You) by Natasha Bedingfield, A New Day by Celine Dion, Stolen Away on 55th & 3rd by Dave Matthews....

Angie said...

I like many others HATE running. But actually force myself to do it several tiems a week. Music is the only thing that keeps me moving and if I don't have it I often can't run very far. Something about hearing my feet pounding the treadmill or pavement and hearing my deep heavy breathes makes me run out of steam quicker.

I love all of the advice on running songs. I have a random workout playlist, but I need to make a running one because I can't run when a slow song plays. I need all up tempo music to keep my feet moving.

Some of my favs to run to are-

REM- End of the world
OK Go- Here it goes again(the treadmill song)
OK Go- Do what you want
Erasure- Take a chance on me
Gwen Stefani- Hollaback Girl(THE KID VERSION!!!)
3 oors Down- Kryptonite

Hi Kristi,

I post every once in a while, but I do LOVE your blog. Anyway, running is my passion (even though I am not very fast) so I will tell you some of my favorite songs. I am sure you will laugh.

NSync- ByeByeBye

Survivor- Eye of the Tiger(Definitely pumps me up!)

Kenny Loggins-Footloose(very fun)

Wild, Wild West

Who Let the Dogs Out

If you can't tell, I like music that makes me smile. It helps me enjoy running. I am living vicariously through others right now while I am pregnant. I look forward to hearing how this goes for you! Good luck.

Two songs that I love to run to are: "I Run for Life" by Melissa Etheridge and "Black Horse and a Cherry Tree." Sometimes I just keep starting them over and over and do an entire run to just those two songs. I'm new to your blog and it is fabulous. You are an inspiration! Thanks for all the great ideas.

Anything Linkin Park. The screams, the yells, the passion. I picture myself running up a vertical wall, or jumping off a cliff without a parachute--maybe the death sensation helps heal the pain...
