Self Portrait Tuesday

Challenge:
take a picture of yourself out and about in your neighborhood, your town, your city. do you live near a landmark or a setting that has ever been used by Hollywood? would we recognize it? does it have historic significance to your community? has it become more popular since it was featured on the big screen? if no movie locations come to mind, how about showing us a significant landmark from your area? get out there and get creative!

Ok, so I feel like I may have been one person who had too many too choose from. I thought and thought.
You might have thought I would do a photo like this.

A silly photo of me in front of the Washington Monument or Jefferson Memorial.
They have both have historical significance, made it to Hollywood, and are a landmark for where I live. But my creative mind would not let me do the obvious and in years to come when reading my blog book, I wanted it to be something that is a remembrance of my time here.

yet, I must say this challenge encouraged me to start a "Me in D.C." smugmug gallery that I hope to fill of me in front of all the monuments.

So then it hit me! Me in front of a place that has been in the media more than any place in D.C. the last month. It has personal significance to me. It will definitely remind me of our time here. It is not really a symbol on the big screen, but how could I not pass this up?

so any guesses????

Yep! it is me in front of Walter Reed Medical Center. Who know the place my husband works would be the most talked about news item of late. (if you don't know what I am talking about, I encourage you to subscribe to your newspaper, listen to the radio, hit CNN.com or watch the news... ok so that was a little sarcastic, but still true)

We have had a lot of phone calls of wanting to the know the scoop and if this is affecting Jeff at all. The answer is no, but I will tell you everyone is on their toes for sure. It is kind of sad of all the negative press that has come out of it, because the Medical Staff really do a great job and are so emotional about their work. It has been an amazing experience for Jeff to be here. He sees many wounded solders as well as famous politicians that I am not allowed to tell you about. He always has a interesting story.

The Army paid for graduate school and we owe them 4 years. There have been times we have questioned this decision. But since moving here we can only feel it was a blessing 11 years in the making, to bring our family to this historical place, have wonderful experiences and meet some incredible people.

Thanks again Eleanor, can't wait for next week.

Seriously, what is keeping everyone from doing this every Tuesday!

Love the pictures, and yes, Walter Reed Medical Center has been on our minds and how everything could effect Jeff. It all is kind of sad. Your Sunday blog was touching, and I know this experience will be a blessing to your family.

nice choice. your expression in your photo says much. i know it can be challenging to be affiliated with a place that is (currently) at the center of negative press. i'm glad that you can shed some positive there.

an entire smugmug gallery? girl, you never put down that camera, do you?!?

You did have a lot to choose from. I love what you choose to highlight. I also feel badly for the neg press because it is obvious they do so much for the troops and country.

It's awesome how you can see the outpouring of blessing to your family right now.

I was curious what you would do today, but I didn't guess this one - creative, girl.

It's surreal when something in your everyday life enters public awareness.

I am not a huge news watcher but thankfully know about this! Every time I hear Walter Reed, I think of your family. So funny what blogging brings into our lives, the lives of others.

Love all 3 photos, I knew you had tons to choose from and I love that you chose the most personal one. Great job!

Back from vacation! Loved getting caught up on your blog - next time I'll have to be a little more organized so I can post while on vacation!

Loved the picture of you in front of the Washington Monument. Taking the picture in front of the Walter Reed really shows support for your husband and for your original decision!

Great job!

I have been anxious to see what you came up with as well. I love that you chose Walter Reed Medical Center. It is too bad that it has gotten negative press lately, but I know that Jeff as well as everyone else that pours their heart and soul into their work there are doing a wonderful job.

I also love your cute face in all of the photos. You're a doll!! Not that I get out into DC very often, but each time I do I look for you!!!

Love it! Best choice for sure. Very timely. But I love the smirk face because I have seen you make it so many times before. :)

Love it- what a great choice to make it something that, in the future, you will be able to look back and remember this specific time in your life and what was going on in the media.

This is great. I love that you didn't deprive us of the shots we were expecting and excited to see but still gave us something new.

Love the shots of you, especially the one by Walter Reed.

I also loved the Sunday blog stories. I love your attitude about it all - the blessing of it and all the positives about all that you are learning and new experiences. That probably comes naturally to you, but I'm just thinking that in that situation others might shy away from different and you guys are fully embracing and seeing the blessings as a result.

Love it. I have been wondering what your thoughts were on the Walter Reed scandal and how it was impacting your family. Thanks for sharing. Also, thank you SO much for the ideas from your Stake Primary meeting. They were all so good and I will be implementing them for sure. We often use a cookie cutter to make cookies that go along with our theme. One theme was "No Empty Chairs" along the same lines of the lost sheep. I was able to find a chair cookie cutter online and it was so cute. I need to make sure that I take pictures of my next meeting.

Great portraits, you're becoming quite the pro. It's great that you took your picture outside of Walter Reed, I've been hearing about it constantly on NPR and always think of you guys. Good job.

Oddly, I thought of you guys too when I heard about it on the news. Sorry about all the negative talk going on. That must be frustrating. Such an appropriate picture. Love it!

Creative idea...I wondered what you would pick, since you live in the 'historical landmark mecca'!

Nice choice...sad press.

Great to read your Sunday post as well...what a great experience!

Love this photo, but not nearly as much as I love what Jeff and your entire family is doing for our country.

I totally guessed it! I was wondering if you'd post about the Walter Reed issues. I'm one of those people that have wanted to call and ask what Jeff thinks about it all.

I love the totally "you" facial expressions! You are such a pretty gal!

How creative and timely for you! I had wondered how you guys were holding up with all the negative attention being given to Walter Reed right now. It's so sad that all the wonderful things Jeff and the other doctors do there are being overshadowed with yuck. I'm glad that you guys can see and focus on the positives.

Good thinking! I'd been wondering about J's connections with that news story. It's news over here in the UK.

Your face is so funny in that pic. You look like you're stalking Jeff, waiting for him to come out! :-D

I love your pictures! I especially love that you picked Walter Reed. What a drama!

D.C. is a great place! My dh and I with our dd went in 1991 for a premie convention and it was our first time out that way, it was fun to explore that area. Fun!
