challenge - Cinco De Mayo
I don't remember much of Cinco De Mayo as I was a little out of it this weekend. So here is my story!
Thursday night at 11:30 pm I was finally getting ready to get to bed. Jeff was in Minneapolis. As I was walking up the stairs, my lower right back really started hurting. I took some Advil and then went up to bed. Within 5 minutes if felt as if I could not catch my breath. I called Jeff in MN but could not get him on his phone. Then I don't know if it was out of pain for faith but I fell to my knees. It is amazing when I pray out of desperation I always think at that moment have I filled my daily prayer bank to feel justified in praying my heart out. bank empty or full i did just that!
I then called a friend from church. Her husband is a Dr. and I was thinking I just want to make sure this is not where my appendix is. It felt as if something had exploded in my body! Linda was so nice to talk me through the pain and get in her car and rush right over. I got in touch with Jeff to give him the scoop. My neighbor Kimberly woke out of a dead sleep to stay with my girls.
Driving to the Naval hospital was a painful yet funny experience. I kept thinking this is what labor must feel like. I have had three kids and three wonderful epidurals. I kept saying to Linda, "Dang why did I not take those Lamaze classes?"
I have had a kidney stone one other time in my life and was recognizing this pain all too well.
The ER was quiet and just a few people, but still to think I was the last to sit down meant I was the last one to be seen. My breathing was getting really heavy and I wanted to squeeze the arm off my chair. I have looked back now thinking I didn't cry or scream out because I was with my friend (who is one of the strongest women I know) I was trying so hard to be brave, when really I wanted to kick and scream on the floor.
By 3:00 am I had had a bag of fluid, some wonderful pain medication and was walking up to the pharmacy to get what I am featuring for my self portrait this week.
The next 2 1/2 days are a total blur but I do know, Linda took my kids for the entire day, Catherine and Elizabeth came and got my kids and fed them dinner, Kimberly took Annie Kate out for our planned Cinco de Mayo celebration, Catherine came and put my kids in the bath, Lisa came and put my kids to bed and made sure I ate dinner and was taking my pain meds, and Angie stopped by as I was going to bed reminding me it was probably diet coke that gave me the stone to begin with.
Jeff came home Friday night by midnight and I spent all day Saturday in bed. I kept thinking I was being lazy and should be over this by now. (so funny when I think I am the boss of me and then find out i am not)
Sunday morning I felt worse than I did on Saturday and was worried I was not getting any better. I had to be at church that afternoon as the Primary President was out of town and I was doing sharing time. My two youngest girls were sick and not making it to church. I finally birthed the stone two hours before church. Just enough time to shower, put on mascara and plan a sharing time. Jeff said he would do primary for me and I said to him, "oh those kids will run all over you, I have to go!"
It was truly a Christmas miracle that I was in the car driving downtown. I had not sat up in 2 days.
My friend from New Orleans, Chanel, was there with her husband and it was so wonderful to see her, hear about her adventures for the week and her fabric finds. They joined us for the great dinner Jeff had made while staying home with his other sick girls.
So, thanks to my Acetaminophen/oxycod in the little orange bottle I survived Cinco de Mayo just fine!

I am now doing great and it is a reminder why you clean your house every day. Before my rescue friends were coming over at midnight, I was cleaning my house as fast as I could, picking up morning cereal off the floor, making my bed, and windexing my mirrors all why I could barely breathe... that will teach me a lesson.

Ack, poor you! What an awful few days. It's quite inspiring that you were able to get well in just enough time to do sharing time!
I know I don't drink enough water, and you have inspired me to go fill up a glass!
no kidding. i have been drinking water like crazy
Oh, My! I am glad you are better...you are a tough chick!
Oh yikes! You are amazing! Cleaning before friends came over to help you, while you were in pain??? I'm glad you are rested now, and that the stone has been birthed! LOL.
You poor girl, what a crazy, painful story. I'm so glad you had such great friends to step in and take care of you and the girls. I can't believe you passed the stone and then went and did Sharing Time! That's dedication right there!
Oh Kristi! How awful! I am so glad you made it through and you have such wonderful friends to help you. I know what a high tolererence you have for pain so for you to want to scream means it was truely intense. Please take it easy for awhile. Really.
I like the name Stan or Sly for your new stone. Sending birth announcements for him? Size, weight, etc. Could be so funny.
I had better clean my house. Just in case....
Oh- So sorry about you painful experience! I am feeling a bit thirsty for a big glass of cold water now (Ha)!
I am the same way about the house- When I started going into labor with my 2nd (at 3AM), I started cleaning the house like crazy (between contractions) knowing friends and family would be arriving soon! My husband thought I was crazy!
stacy, i meant to mention the last stone i had you and mark were there. remember i was going a little crazy while jeff and mark were talking and i said... ok i really need to go to the hospital. i passed it in the car.
Kristy Brooke, I am Ashley Carter's sister and I read your blog though this is the first time I've commented! I am so glad you are feeling better. I laughed out loud when I read that you were cleaning your house through the pain. I did the same thing when my water broke and I was in hard labor with my daughter. My neighbor was coming over and I cleaned the bathroom between contractions. We are crazy!
WOW! what a great story. (the "you're o.k. part"). crazy weekend for you, no doubt. your pic is very cute, though, behind that lovely orange bottle!
So glad you are doing better. Now I want to go get a big glass of water.
I can't believe you passed the stone and then did sharing time. You are amazing. I am with you on cleaning the house. I would have been doing the same thing!
About the Keen's. Nordstrom doesn't have them listed on sale on their website but they had a sign at the store. You can call your local store and check. I called because REI has them on sale until May 13. But they only had red and black so I called Nordstrom to see if they would match the price and they said they would. But when we got there they had the sign up. REI does have all the colors on their website, I just didn't know my kids sizes.
Ouch!! I am glad that you are feeling better. I also can't believe you cleaned you house while you were in PAIN! WOW!!!!
That sounds horrible! I, too, am amazed that you did sharing time right after that. I don't like all this blaming Diet Coke, though. . . .
Aye-yi-yi Kristi!
Ouch! I am so glad that your feeling better. What a blessing it was to have dear friends to help out with the girls. Thank heavens for good pain meds. when we need them. You totally reminded me of myself. I would have been doubled over cleaning too.
I finally got a chance to read through your post - wow, glad to see you're feeling better. What a great support system you have. Craig had one while we were in Alexandria and I know it the worst pain I've seen him in. Really glad you got through it - and amazingly right before your responsibilities at church - go girl! Hopefully this is the last time you have to experience this. Love the new picture btw :-)
Way too much excitement for a weekend...especially without a hubby around! Thank goodness for good friends to step in when you need them! I'm so glad to hear you are doing better...and that last parts cracks me up about cleaning everything up, while in pain! HA!
I TOO have birthed kidney stones -3 different times!! I threw up out the window on the way to the hospital from the pain -the first one was the WORST!! It was the size of a grain of sand! I was a newlywed- thought I was dying-just wanted someone in the ER to shoot me & get it over with -I didn't care about my life or new hubs-that is a strange feeling - Giving birth to babies WAS less pain! The 3rd kidney stone was 3mm in size with spikey thorns on it! It was wicked looking! I had to bring it to work & show the DDS, because he too had passed stones & could appreciate this!hahaha
I loved your story and photo! What a blessing to have passed it in the nick of time!!Amazing :) Janae
Glad to hear you are feeling better. I can only imagine the pain (I have only heard horror stories of kidney stones). It was probably a good thing you stayed in bed. I have a hard time with that as well. Thank goodness for good friends and neighbors close by!
sorry that was me :)
Sadly I can say I had a similar pain this weekend. All of a sudden I was on the floor writhing in pain and I could barely talk - like you said it was like something had exploded in me. It was worse than any labor pain I've felt. I did the praying like mad thing too and went to the ER. I was sure it was a kidney stone (though I've never had one). Turned out we couldn't figure out what it was, but it was likely a mystery pain I've been dealing with and may be a spasming sphinctor in my intestinal tract. Ugh. I'm afraid of having it happen to me again and when I'm alone - you're right - good reason to keep the house clean!
I don't really know what labor feels like either - 4 inductions and 4 epidurals.
Unbelievable that this happenned with Jeff out of town - I'm glad you had such good friends and neighbors to take care of you.
I'm trying to wrap my brain around the fact that you still taught sharing time on Sunday.
Oh dear, no fun! Glad your feeling better.
I did have to laugh at the house thing, I always wonder what would happen if I had to go quick and have someone here for my kids, ack! Not that it is horrible but it could be better...lol
My life was SO PARALLEL to yours this weekend! I passed a stone while at the Conference Center in SLC. I put some of the details on my blog today, a picture of where I laid and yesterday I mentioned it. For me, it happened on Sunday. I was there for Women's Conference.
Luckily I got a blessing, that my Sister arranged from 2 nice strangers and also I somehow had the foresight to bring my Vicadin with (I've had kidney stones before too, but they are usually few and far between - so that was a miracle I even brought it).
I'm SO GLAD you're feeling better!! We know 2 miracles occurred this weekend at least, one for you and one for me to get better!! (((HUGS)))
Ow! I am so glad that you are doing better and that you have such a great group of friends willing to help you out right away.
Cleaning while in pain, you are a tough cookie. I did do that while I was in labor, but from what I hear, kidney stones are far more painful. I am off to drink a gallon of water.
Oh, and make my bed.
YIKES! I can't believe it, and while Jeff was gone too! I hate hearing about people having kidney stones multiple times -- I so do not want to go through that pain again. Agony. So sorry you had to endure that. So glad you had good friends to help you through. And so glad it is finished!!
Yowzie! What a crazy story. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that--and yes, why do these things always happen when the husbands are gone. I probably would have done the same thing as far as cleaning the house. Glad you are feeling better.
I am so scared of having a kidney stone. Mostly because of how many people say it is actually worse than labor! I am so glad you are feeling better. Love the photo, what would we do without good meds?
