my word of the year.

Why did I pick this word this year? Why didn't I pick the word
sitonthecouchandeatchocolate?

I seem to be stretching many things lately (except my muscles, note to self, do more of that!)
so my word of the year is really kicking in.

These magnets were sent to me by Mique and are so awesome!! I would love to peer pressure her into a little how to on her blog or a link to buy more, they are great!

school started this week and it has been awesome. AK got a wonderful teacher and the above box was full of gum and we took it to her on the day of Sneak a Peek.

today is the teacher's birthday and in one week me and the other room mom made 25 t-shirts for all the kids to wear today in the celebration. She was surprised and it was so fun. I also have to put in a HUGE plug (why have I not done this sooner!) for a wonderful project in case you are looking for one.
My friend here in D.C. makes flag quilts to give away at Christmas, Veterans & Memorial Day at Walter Reed hospital. (she has spent many Christmas eve's sewing up to the last minute) Her husband is an orthopaedic physician there and many of the soldiers who he personally hands these quilts to are his patients. There have been some years that he has delivered them and it has taken all day, as he spends much time talking with them and their families. He dresses in "dress blues" to deliver them out of respect for their service. Linda, his wife, never looks for credit and does not receive any. I have always asked her, "don't you want to go and just see the look on their face when they get it" she always says it's not about me, it is about them.
What is great about these quilts is that they keep them in their room and use it as an autograph book for many famous people and political leaders that come in daily to the hospital.
How cool would it be to make a quilt that will then hold the President's signature for a solider.

My friend Chanel found out about this project and has taken it by storm and is encouraging all of us to either take on a quilt or pass this information on to a group who might be interested.

Take a second to read and see some awesome photos. If you don't sew but know someone who does and might be interested let them know. It is a easy first quilt project if you want to tackle it.
My friend Linda has no idea that Chanel has done this and it will be a wonderful surprise for her to see so many people getting involved.

What is it they say about being careful what you pray for? Maybe it's the same with choosing a word to focus on for the year.
I am hoping you are doing well. I've missed your blog.

STRETCH - what a word! Mine is BE STILL and has been interesting to see what has happened because of that word choice!
This is a fantastic project! What a good and noble thing to be involved with. What a gift from the heart to give to our servicemen and women! Love it! Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad you're back to blogging- it hasn't been the same without your posts. As for the fabric letters- I got the idea from the Purl Bee and it's the first link (ABC Fabric Magnets) on my How to Lists on my sidebar. They used pinking shears, I found that a little tough and kinda liked the straight lines without. There are even letters to download on the link. So check it out. Simple but fun. Glad you liked them. And they looked great in the pic ;).
And I LOVED the teacher gift. So clever.
I'm gonna get in touch with Chanel so our YW (i'm with the Beehives) can get involved in the quilt thing. Awesome!

I am so happy to see that you've posted again, it's been way too long and your adoring friends and fans miss you!!

I think Mique is genius for making those fabric covered magnet letters, especially with your word for the year--that was some seriously thoughtful good mail. Is it kind of freaky that it's already September tomorrow? I feel like I'm still working on incorporating my word for the year!

That quilt project is awesome, I'll have to pass the info on to my mom.

What a great enrichment idea. Thanks for sharing the info.

So coincidental that you would post about these quilts for injured soldiers. There is a website www.qovf.org (stands for quilts of valor foundation) that promotes making Quilts of Valor to give to wounded soliders. I'm am just putting the border on my quilt and then it will be sent off to someone who will donate her time to quilt it. I have loved doing this and it makes me more appreciative of all that these soldiers have given in the service of their country.

The quilts are a great project. Right now I'm looking into a project that is sponsored by our local police to support members of the Canadian Forces.

Kristi-
I don't sew but would be thrilled to donate some money to someone who plans to take on the project to buy supplies.
Point me in the right direction :)

Kristine's funny talking about being careful what you pray for - while we were on holiday, I realised Erin was quietly ambling along behind us through an arboretum, chanting 'be careful what you wish for, be careful what you wish for, be careful what you wish for' - oooooh, spooky! :-D

The quilting project is brilliant, although quilting here is quite an uncommon pursuit, I think. It's a very American thing, isn't it? The one in that photograph is stunning!

I remember talking about this project, thanks for reminding me! Its such a good idea, I am in love. I'm going to try and do a little pr for this project with my YW. We may not make it for this year, deadline's coming up, but I'll see what we can do. This might make me finally give in an buy (gasp) my own sewing machine. There's so pricey! :)

Huh. If I'd picked sitonthecouchandeatchocolate I'd be doing SO well with my goals right now! Love your word, and love the magnets. I just love how much you have run with it and stretched yourself this year. You are inspiring to me!

What an excellent project, they don't look that hard to make. Thanks for supporting our troops and posting about this wonderful way we can help.
